Cris has had a rewarding weekend

 Hello all!

So, adding to my saga of 'finding-out-whether-Robert's-book-is-coming-out-or-if-it's-actually-happening-at-all', I have discovered that it is in fact open for preorder,  and coming out in August. Plus, the cover has been revealed!

Daww, look at our brilliant boy! (Also, check it out, JK Rowling on the front cover; nice one Robert!) I'm probably going to place my preorder sometime this week, and there's also been whispers of book signings... Fingers crossed they're on days I can make it to! I've never actually met any sort of comedian in the flesh before, and Robert Webb seems like a pretty good place to start off.

So, I turn it over to you: what celebs/comedians have you seen IRL? Did you get to hug them and cry  have the oppertunity to speak to them? please do tell!

I met Douglas Adams once, but I was too awkward to do anything other than have him sign a book (and not even the book he was there to promote, which in retrospect seems quite rude, but I was like 14). Ditto with Terry Pratchett about 6 years after that (at least that time it was to sign the book he had just published).

I waver between long stretches of thinking 'don't meet your heroes' (for various reasons - because it feels like it must be weird for them, because I worry that it would inevitably be disappointing and it's easier to just save myself the disappointment and then still be able to be a fan of them afterwards because they haven't disappointed me) and then brief, intense periods where I just want to have a hug from [whoever], and I think that even if it was just a hug, I could carry away something from that and keep it with me forever. It might even be better if it was just a hug and not an attempt at conversation, because then I wouldn't have to think of something clever to say that someone else hasn't already said. But then that feels even creepier. IDK. Feelings=complicated.

Uhhhh, sorry about that dissertation of feelings! What about you? Anyone you've met who meant a lot to you, or was interesting?

Damn, Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett are big names! It's understandable that you'll act a little awkward when meeting people you admire, especially when you're at a young age. And I totally understand your point about never meeting your heroes! I was lucky enough to meet almost all of the IRL people of my last RPF fandom, and I have mixed feelings about it. Some acted quite rudely (and understandably so, seeing as they'd been signing and talking for hours), but others were genuinely wonderful, charming people, just like their on-screen personas. I don't know, but in my personal experience the good outweighs the bad.

As for the people I've met, nobody famous famous, but as I said I did get to meet all the people from my last RPF fandom! To me it meant a lot, as I'd been making fannish content about them for about 5 years, and getting to see them in the flesh had me very excited indeed. Some things that struck me about meeting the people you've been watching for years are:

1) Their faces are super HD! You can see all their pores and hairs (That sounded creepy. It's not meant to be!)
2) Your height difference to them. Seeing my faves tower over me is not something I was expecting. Silly, but there you go.
3) Eye contact. The fact that they're looking right at you, like YOU. It freaked me out, a little.
