This post contains a write-up of my trip to Cambridge, musings on Back, HNTBAB, Taskmaster squeeing and fanart!
Ok, here we go:
Visited Cambridge for the first time in my life, and was practically bowled over how pretty it all was. Never in my life have I seen such a high concentration of beautiful old buildings, and beautiful old buildings in use. I kept unwittingly making Harry Potter comparisons to my companion, and then catching myself because goddamn it, I'm English, so why should I be talking like I'm a Chinese tourist? Speaking of Chinese tourists, there were hundreds of them out that day, despite the fact it was off-peak. What's the appeal of Cambridge specifically to the people of China? I'll never know....
We had a wander around a lot of nooks and crannies while trying to get to the river, and came across a sign directing new students to tours of the campuses and info packs. I'd like to think that I could easily pass as a student, and we toyed with the idea of breaking in (is it really breaking in? I mean they left the door open...) and exploring inside some of the buildings. But alas, I felt guilty and chickened out. (Throwback to Tim Key successfully pretending to go to Cambridge for a good few years! The boy's got guts.) We then saw a post with open-closing times on and changed all the numbers, called it class warfare and ran off, laughing madly.
This trip seeded some serious doubts within me regarding the path I'd chosen in life, and visiting Peterhouse College felt like the cherry on top of my self-directed angst at my departure from academia into more vocational studies. By choosing illustration/graphics, I've cursed myself to exclusively urban, modern campuses... It was as if I was being shown all of this then being told: "and this is what you could've had!" I've got this very romanticised view of Cambridge Uni, and of academia in general, and I feel that this trip only intensified it.
Later on we went to the Fitzwilliam Museum and I cried at a painting. I think I made the right choice.
I'm not going to talk about 'How Not to Be a Boy' in this post (haven't finished it!) but please be assured that I am loving every bit and that a longer post will be on it's way as soon as I finished it.~
Is anyone else watching Back? It's strange (in a good way) to see my boys in a high end nicely directed drama. (I wish I could make gifs!) Anyway, theorise with me people! I think after the fairground event, Andrew's alibi as a successful businessperson has been disproved, which brings into question the rest of his claimed achievements. Is he lying maliciously? Out of loneliness because he's never had a family since then, and just wants to be accepted? Is actually a massive manipulative dickhead? Andrew, what is your game?!
As a side, I'd just like to say that I am 100% behind David's transformation into a big hairy bear; he looks extremely huggable.
The new series of Taskmaster is off to a strong start! Sally Phillips is a mad, mad woman, and I think I'm in love with her because of it. Also, Mark Watson and Alex Horne cuddles! <3 (I may be the only person shipping it, but I won't let that stop me.)
Now, the fanart! Here's a compilation of all the arts and doodles I've made over the summer with captions. Hope you enjoy!

Surprise surprise, more Richards! This time I'm using him as a victim to my bad taste in fashion.
Liked the one of the left so much I decided to clean it up and colour it!
And that's it in the way of fanart for now! I am planning to draw more Mitchell/Brooker, as tribute to all the fic I've read of it, so please be patient for that, because it will happen! (At some point! I don't know when but one day! Promise!)

I'm still thinking up perfect comment to leave, because this fic made me feel a lot of strong emotions and I need time to translate those feelings into understandable English because. Words.

Date: 2017-09-17 01:09 pm (UTC)I think I know something of the feeling you had about Cambridge - there was a similar time in my life that sometimes feels like a wasted opportunity (involving Cambridge especially) and I do find myself thinking 'what if?' But on the other hand, if I'd made a different choice, I'd probably have lost something of the wonderful things I have right now. So it's weird, looking back on it, feeling both regret but also not-regret.

And yes! It's always interesting to see how different or similar comedians are in real life compared to their on-stage persona. If you want 100% genuine Richard, I highly recommend the Adam Buxton Podcast episode with him in it. From listening to that, I'd say he's pretty similar, except much more shy and softly spoken. (Listen to him talking to waiters and air hostesses, he's practically whispering and stumbles over a lot of his words.) Anyway, he's a little less openly dorky and more anxious and self-conscious, I suppose.
God I wish I could give that boy a hug!

I am hugely enjoying Back - very funny, well put together, traditional premise in many aspects but shot in a modern way. I really have no idea what Andrew's up to but I can't wait to find out! As well as DM and RW, natch, the supporting players are excellent - loving Olivia Poulet and Louise Brealey in particular.

Er, if you actually do want to know why there are so many Chinese tourists in Cambridge, there is a specific reason! There's a famous poem about Cambridge taught as part of the standard Chinese school curriculum. Yes, all the supporting actors in Back are marvellous. I've been recognising a lot of them from other things and adore them all. (also, the fact that Oliver Reeder's girlfriends have technically interacted. brings me such joy.)
